There Is No Internet Points Here
I noticed a key difference between the old-school websites and all the modern social media. There is no way to obtain points. There is no validation to be gained. Reddit has karma. Facebook and Instagram have likes. Whatever action you take on the Internet there's always a reward waiting to be had. Not here.
In the revived web people build websites and write articles because they feel like it. There's no immediate feedback. You just put your stuff out there for other curious people to find and maybe enjoy for a few minutes. That's already good enough.
It reminds me of the Goodhart's Law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure." When likes, karma, followers, comments, and other magic beans become the goal everything falls apart. Internet interactions become a compulsion, not something we do because we're genuinely interested or we actually need something to either solve some problem or just relax and have a good time.
This post might not be read by anyone but it already fulfilled its purpose. But now, maybe someone else finds it? Someone who likes being lost on the Internet, hoping to stumble upon something creative, new, useful, or simply wacky.
If you are such person you've already won and got what you wanted. There's no need for Internet Points anymore. We are free.
